Why has the College football poll system become so corrupt and useless?

HomeRun Hitter Jake asked:

After learning that Penn State only dropped 3-5 spots in the polls after losing to an unranked team I refuse to care about and trust college football again until they fix this thing.

For now I will stick to the NFL and NBA.

Good. College football is only better for having one less uneducated fan. How far should Penn State have dropped? To 26? Should Iowa move up to 2 or 3? Stick to the pros my friend. The college game is obviously too complicated for you.

cause it has.. the BCS want the 2 teams that will draw the best number of people and make the most money . It is not about picking the best 2 teams for the championship game . Texas Tech ..right now should be the # 1 team in the nation.. just look at there wins and who they have beat.. they destroyed #9 ok st. by 56 to 20 while #1 alabama had to have overtime to beat #15 LSU. 27to 21

First off, the poll system has always been corrupt. Second, two of the teams it dropped below also lost to unranked teams. Oklahoma is ahead of a team that beat them and they both only have one loss. Utah struggled against Michigan, and some other crappy teams, but yet is ranked number 7 or 8. One year BYU won a national championship when they struggled to beat an unranked Michigan team in their bowl game. Penn State in 1994 didn’t get a shot at the title, despite having the majority of their offensive players go on to start in the NFL, several of which are still starting.

The system is not perfect but it is reasonable. College football is tough to put the two strongest teams together for the championship game for three reasons:
1.) # of teams
2.) limited number of games each team can play
3.) turn over of players

It is easy for Pro sports to develop system to determine the best teams because there are no constraints. The BCS is similar to health care in the US- Clearly it is broken but no one has offered a better solution that’s plausible. College athletes play for the love of the game and spirit of Competition.
