What is a good weight to bench and squat for college football?

I’m goin to college to play football this coming fall. I’m 5′11′ and weigh 188 pounds. So, what is a good weight for a safety to bench press and squat? And I also need to know what I can do to increase my speed. Every lil bit of info helps. Thanks for all the help.

Here’s a list of the top safeties in the country being recruited in the incoming class, some have bench and squat stats, some don’t. Hope this helps.

You didn’t say which division you’d be playing in, so I am going to assume at that size you’re a D1 safety.

I would shoot for 300 on the bench and around 450 on the squat. This should make you very competitive and protect you on the hard hits.

As for speed, the squats will help with explosiveness, but you also need functional speed. if you’re a safety, practice running backwards and sideways, since you do that on the field. Also sprints (20-40 yds) are good, but also do some balance stuff, to help you get through your reactions at top speed.

400/500 by the time you’re a senior? That’s the range some of the guys drafted last year were doing at safety. To run faster, run down hills. It teaches your muscles to go faster and if you don’t catch up, you’ll fall.
