I live in the Greater New York Area, and have become a fan of college football in the past years. Now its time to pick a team to follow for this season. I’m partial to the ACC, but I wont limit myself. Make a suggestion and support your argument. Simply saying a team is good wont cut it, defend your case with tradition and history. . . I’m a Jets fan for peats sake I can handle disappointment.

Georgia Tech. Plenty of traditions and 4 football national championships over the years. Always put a good product on the field and put up a good fight.

Arkansas

Best Rushing team in the SEC for 4 of the last 5 years.

Has the coolest chant of any team in the NCAA (Woo Pig Sooie!)

The most exciting player in the game with Darren McFadden

The off season drama keeps you involved :P
An explosive offense that makes just enough mistakes to drive you crazy… which keeps you interested :)
A fast D that is hard hitting as well as young and eager… should make for some fun fun fun this year :)
Plus we are always the underdog of the SEC West.. but we almost always play solid games… heck, the last two years we’ve only lost to LSU by a combined 7 points!

Just a thought…. :)

If you want to pick a team from the State of New York may I suggest the Syracuse Orange. They aren’t as good as they used to be; but they are probably the best team in New York.

SOME HISTORY
Syracuse played its first intercollegiate football game in 1889, and achieved its first success in the 1890s and 1900s. With the construction of state-of-the-art Archbold Stadium in 1907, Syracuse rose to national prominence under Hall of Fame coach Frank Buck O’Neill. The 1915 squad garnered a Rose Bowl invitation that the school declined, having already played on the West Coast that season.

The 1920s saw continued success with teams featuring star end Vic Hanson, the only individual who is a member of both the Basketball Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame, and who later coached the team. Through this period, Colgate University was the school’s biggest rival.

The late 1930s and 1940s saw a decline in fortunes that began to reverse when Ben Schwartzwalder took over as coach in 1949. Syracuse made its first bowl appearance in the 1953 Orange Bowl, followed by appearances in the 1957 Cotton Bowl and the 1959 Orange Bowl. The 1957 Cotton Bowl team featured Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown. During this era, Penn State emerged as Syracuse’s principal rival, replacing Colgate University which had not kept up to compete at a national level.

In 1959, Syracuse enjoyed an undefeated regular season, following which it won the Cotton Bowl and was voted National Champion. The team featured sophomore running back Ernie Davis, who went on to win the Heisman Trophy in 1961, but died of leukemia before being able to play professionally.

Syracuse remained competitive through the 1960s with a series of All American running backs, including Floyd Little and Larry Csonka. The program began a gradual decline, though, in the 1970s. The construction of the Carrier Dome in 1980 began to turn the program around, as did the success of future NFL stars Joe Morris and Art Monk.

The program returned suddenly to national prominence in 1987 under coach Dick MacPherson with an undefeated 11-0 regular season record. The team featured Maxwell Award winning quarterback Don McPherson and fullback Daryl Johnston. The team missed an opportunity to play for the NCAA Division I-A national football championship, because both the University of Oklahoma and the University of Miami also finished undefeated that year and finished higher in the polls. Instead, the team faced Southeastern Conference champion Auburn University in the Sugar Bowl. The game ended in a tie when Auburn kicked a late field goal rather than trying for a game winning touchdown.

Over the next 14 seasons (1988-2001), the program enjoyed tremendous success under coach MacPherson and his successor Paul Pasqualoni, appearing in 11 bowl games (including 3 major bowls) and winning 9. The team also captured or shared 4 Big East football championships during this period. Prominent players of the period included Donovan McNabb, Marvin Harrison, Dwight Freeney, Keith Bulluck, Rob Moore, Donovin Darius, Qadry Ismail, Kevin Johnson, Rob Konrad, Tebucky Jones and Marvin Graves. Rivalries shifted in the early 1990s as Penn State ended its series with Syracuse and joined the Big Ten. Syracuse, meanwhile, joined the newly formed Big East football conference with traditional rivals University of Pittsburgh, West Virginia University and Boston College and national programs Miami and Virginia Tech.

In 2004, Miami and Virginia Tech left the Big East to join the Atlantic Coast Conference, followed by Boston College in 2005, threatening the stature of the Big East. These departures coincided with a dry period for the football program, prompting the University to hire Greg Robinson, former defensive coordinator for the Texas Longhorns, as head coach beginning with the 2005 season.

On November 12, 2005, Syracuse University retired the uniform number 44, to honor Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, Floyd Little, and the legacy of the number itself.

The Huskies!! They are going places this year. In a game featuring two quarterbacks who had never started in college, Jake Locker easily outperformed Andrew Robinson. Locker, the gem of Washington’s 2005 recruiting class who was given the No. 1 job at the start of spring practice and held off a strong challenge from senior Carl Bonnell, ran for 83 yards on 10 carries and was 14-for-19 passing for 142 yards before being replaced by Bonnell in the fourth quarter. He is awesome!

LSU! awsome QB and D not number one yet but my prediction to win the championship. If you’re partial to the ACC I’d go with either VT or BC! Good luck!

Why not Rutgers? They are a definite up and comer. They are starting to keep all of those prime NJ recruits for themselves. It is probably early enough that you wouldn’t be accused of jumping on the bandwagon.

If you have something against NJ teams just sit down and watch one WVU game. That offense is the most exciting thing going in the NCAA today!!!

before last night I would have said FSU but I also like LSU…they are one of those schools that have a good team in football , baseball , and basketball…not many schools are good in as many sports and have those cool purple and yellow colors

Pick ACC Florida State
For this reason. You have college footballs all time winning coach, and a school with 2 national titles in the 90’s out of 4 national title appearances.
I would like to say follow FSU because they’re so good, but last nights lost to Clemson makes that debatable.

I like the Seminoles because of their commitment to winning by making some major changes in their coaching staff in the off season. They made a strong come back effort last night although it was too little to late. I don’t see them as ACC champs this year, but they usually provide for some fun games to watch.

New York and football don’t go together - try hockey. The Red River Shootout between OU and Texas is the best rivalry in sports - twice as big as Michigan /OSU! Auburn vs. Alabama is second.

West Virginia Mountaineers why you ask because currently they are one of the best teams in the country with the best backfield in the country with pat white and steve slaton. they also recruited the number one running back this year in noel devine and will be a force to be reconed with some history is that wvu has had two undeafed seasons 1988 and 1993 and reaching the national title once in 88 where they lost to notre dame. in 2004 kay jay harris set a big east record with 337 rushing yards in a game against east carolina last season pat white was selected offensive player of the year in the big east they have won two bowl games in a row the nokia sugar bowl against georgia and the gator bowl against georgia tech

Just one word of advice….PLEASE do not embarrass yourself in the New York area by rooting for Arkansas. You’d be better off with Appalachian St.

ACC, hmmm, i say Boston College. Decent up and coming quarterback, hard hitters on defense, it fills your ACC need. They should more than likely end up in at least the ACC title game. Semi close to your general vicinity.
If that is not your bag and you want to stray from the ACC then i second the call on Rutgers.

Virginia Tech. #1 Defense in college last year.
Great special teams, no one blocked more kicks over the last 15 years and perhaps, ever. Frank Beamer is an alum and took his school to national promenence.

choose a team that represents your state. it shouldnt matter how good or bad they are, they are your team and by being in your state, they represent you!

Off the top of my head, I’d say you should take a good look at Syracuse. Great winning tradition. Locale works for you.

Or you could jump on the bandwagon and root for USC, because everyone else does.
