Jason H asked:

I am trying to walk-on my college football team as a tight end. I am 6′3 and weight 195 pounds. I was on my high school football for one year as a senior though I was third string and wished I had started earlier. What do college football coaches look for and what are my chances?

I’d think you were too skinny to be a TE in d-1, but just my opinion

Well you have to have heart for one thing and just go out there and work your butt off and i want to play for a D-1 team also but if you dont make tightend try for Safety perfect size for that position

You’re a little small to play a D-1 TE. My sister is an admin. asst. with a Big Ten football program (not naming it). She said you would need to send in video to the coaches to even be considered for walking on. Go to the football offices, ask to speak to one of the GA’s or football ops. coordinator and ask them what they’re looking for and if they’d consider a try-out for you in spring ball. Good luck!

Forget TE try wide receiver, depending on your 40 time. If you want to be a TE, gain some weight. Your height is good for that position though. How’s your blocking and route running also? All of these things are important to coaches for trying out for receiving positions.
It is also difficult to make the roster as a walk on. Most teams have their rosters filled through scholarships.
