How can a college football team share a national title with another team?

they shared because they ended up with the same records….I’m thinking BCS started about 1997-98??
The BCS needs to creat a playoff system like all other sports have. the only reason they dont is because of money. but if they did it would creat more money for the schools and a better fan base.
Thats not the real question though…this is the question…
How can LSU win the national title game outright but have to split the national championship with USC? (2003-04 season) And if you believe that this is the right thing to do…how the hell does an undefeated team in Auburn (especially in the toughest division in football, SEC) not get at least a split or a chance to play in the title game and USC gets it outright?
West coast bias…thats what it boils down to. Thats why college football will never be true to ranking and the natl champion will never have that much meaning until there is a playoff. If there was a playoff USC would have NEVER played for a natl championship and would never have gotten any splits.
The BCS started in 1998, before that it was all decided by the polls. The most recognized one is the AP Poll, which is what you see when on TV they say Number ___ playing number ___. Before 1998, the BCS, and the BCS bowl game the national champion was voted. Thus there was no consensus reached in 1990 when Ga Tech (go Jackets!) won (shared) the title.
Two teams share a national title because of an outdated poll system. College football coaches and College football writers have their own seperate poll which they vote for the top 25 teams 1-25 on a weekly basis. This was causing too much confusion because the system was too subjective. In theory this was one of the reasons the BCS was created. The other one was money. Every other division in college football has a playoff system. Only division 1 has the outdated poll system. By the way the BCS has its own poll which does not start to come out until the 7th or 8th week of the season. This is a computer geneated poll which has caused more confusion because at the end of the year the top two teams on the computer poll meet at that years designated bowl to lplay for the nationl title. The computer was supposed to eliminate the subjectivity of the human poll but it has led to more confusion because if the writers and coaches do not like the computers top pick they vote for whoever they think is the #1.
